Jill Scott, the daughter of Joyce Scott in Philadelphia Pennsylvania was born on April 4th in 1972. Since she was the only child Scott was also raised by her maternal grandmother. Scott went to The Philadelphia High School for Girls when she was a senior, and then she was accepted into Temple University. Along with two job opportunities, Scott was also a teacher at Temple University. She hoped to be a English teacher at high school. The dream of becoming an English teacher at high school ended when she dropped out of high school. She started her career as a spoken-word artist who performed her own works during live poetry readings. She eventually linked up to Amir Quest love Thompson of The Roots. You Got Me was co-written by both. At a Roots show, she revealed herself as an artist. After that, she was able to get collaborations with artists like Eric Benet Will Smith and Common. She gained performance experience in the Canada tour of Broadway's musical Rent. The label signed her as its first artist.
